Como sucede todos los años en vísperas al Oscar, se entregaron los Independent Spirit Awards, los premios que reconocen lo mejor del cine independiente. Como era de esperar, Silver Linings Playbook fue la gran ganadora de la noche. Su director, David O. Russell, se llevó a casa dos premios como Mejor Director y Mejor Guión, mientras que Jennifer Lawarence ganó como Mejor Actriz Protagonista. Ésta, junto a Beasts of the Southern Wild, son las dos cintas indie que impresionaron a la Academia y que obtuvieron una buena cantidad de nominaciones incluida Mejor Película.
Por su parte, John Hawkes ganó el premio a Mejor Actor Protagonista por su rol en The Sessions, y su compañera de reparto, Helen Hunt, fue galardonada como Mejor Actriz Secundaria. El reconocimiento a Mejor Actor Secundario fue para Matthew McConaughey por su actuación en Magic Mike.
